Mongolian National Council for Sustainable Development

 

Composition and Membership

The Mongolian NCSD was created in 1994 by the Government Resolution.

The NCSD was operational until 2004.

The council is composed of local administration, local self-governing organisations, governmental, non-governmental, youth and women’s organisations. More specifically, there were 24 members represented by 4 ministers, 2 deputy ministers, 4 Aimag governors, 4 state secretaries, 2 directors of ministry departments, 5 NGO and business members.

Chair: Director of Sustainable Development and Strategic Planning of the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism.

Two Deputy Chairs: chair of the Standing Committee of the SGK (chairs of economic, environmental and social standing committees on rotational basis) and a Government Cabinet Member (Finance, Environment and Trade and Industry Ministers on a rotational basis).

 

Mission Statement

The Mongolian National Sustainable Development Strategy aims for:

  • ‘combating poverty in the next 10-15 years, bearing in mind that poverty poses a threat to national sovereignty;
  • Reversing environmental degradation, in particular water resources depletion, deforestation and desertification, and increasing the adaptation to climate change;
  • Providing economic, social welfare, education, cultural, and information basis for human development and better life quality; and
  • increasing the role in international development and strenghtening international cooperation, in particular in tackling global environmental degradation, coping with natural disasters.'

 

Recent Activities

  • Biological diversity, ecosystems and sustainable tourism – several projects were implemented to combat desertification, promote small business and entrepreneurship, and provide vocational training.
  • Infrastructure and urban development – goals and targets for sustainable development were integrated into all sector policies and planning. Furthermore, a new structure was developed to implement sustainable development goals into newly approved projects and initiatives. Examples of these new structures are the Funding Corporation for Housing, the Mongol IPOTECH Corporation Ltd., and the National Committee for Facilitating Trade and Transportation.
